AIR PURIFYING Shamrocks for all! Oxalis, aka Shamrocks are a really fun and low maintenance houseplant once you get to know them.
There are many different varieties of Oxalis available. Here at Sunnyside our favorites are:
The Purple Oxalis, which is a rich dark plum color that often has a vibrant pink pattern seemingly painted on. Its flowers are usually dainty with a light lavender hue.
Green is the classic St. Patrick's day symbol. Plain and simple green with bright white flowers.
‘Iron Cross’ is the best of both worlds, combining a deep purple center with a bright green border and dramatic hot pink flowers. This one is truly an eye-catcher!
All Oxalis want the brightest window you have (if you’re in Washington) because too little light can cause leggy growth or dormancy. They need organic indoor potting soil and a pot with good drainage. You want to keep their pot size small, don’t go bigger than a 2-inch increase in diameter. Let them dry at least half way before watering in the Spring/Summer; in the Fall/Winter when days are shorter and light is lower, unless you have supplemental light, I would highly recommend letting the soil dry completely. Oxalis thrive in humidity, so in their perfect world they would have a humidifier and/or be misted regularly.
The Oxalis (aka Shamrock) is often associated with good luck, prosperity and joy. The 3-leaf structure has symbolism in many religions and cultures. For example, in Celtic culture it signifies resilience, love and protection. Added bonus, the leaves close at night! So if you sit still and watch long enough you can see them move!
