We LOVE Kokedamas! They’re back in store just in time for Valentine's Day! The perfect gift for yourself, your friends, family, or that special someone <3
Kokedama directly translates to “Moss ball” in Japanese. They take plant art to a whole new level! You simply remove the pot from your plant, pack the roots into a mud ball (remember playing with mud balls when you were a kid? I do.. haha!)… Anyways, your roots are in a mud ball, then encased in moss and wrapped up with string. The soil depends on the plant (use the same soil you would use in a pot) then you want to use Sphagnum moss to encase the mud ball. The reason for the sphagnum moss is it holds more moisture than any other moss in the world, so the plants can get a good drink when the time comes to water. If you want to use decorative moss, you can encase the sphagnum moss in whatever you choose! I like green sheet-moss the best. Finally, I would recommend wax string for the wrapping, although fishing line works too but it’s easy to cut yourself with so take care while wrapping!
Most plants enjoy life in a Kokedama, especially the ones who like to dry out between waterings. Every plant's water needs are different but for most you’re safe to water as soon as they are completely dry; the Kokedama ball will be very light. When your plant outgrows the Kokedama, simply cut the string, remove the moss and re-wrap. (We offer re-wrapping Kokedamas as a service here.) You can also go right back to a pot at any time.
Kokedamas can hang, be set in a saucer, or even used in a macrame setup; You can put a Kokedama almost anywhere! Be sure you are checking the environmental needs of the plant within are met first and foremost of course. We can help with that, just ask! :)
Also, several times a year we offer DIY Kokedama classes here at Sunnyside so check out our workshop schedule and don’t forget to sign up!
